Universal epoch-making dual-mode oil-electric hybrid transmission off-line

On October 29, local time, the general-purpose two-mode hybrid transmission officially began production at GM’s plant in Baltimore, Maryland. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to expand its hybrid technology portfolio. The transmission was jointly developed by GM, BMW, and DaimlerChrysler prior to their strategic separation, highlighting a collaborative effort that laid the foundation for this advanced powertrain solution. The same day, GM celebrated the completion of its first dual-mode hybrid transmission at the Baltimore facility with a special ceremony. According to GM, 78% of the components used in the transmission were sourced from American suppliers, reinforcing the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing and supporting local industries. The new dual-mode transmission will first be installed in GM’s top-selling hybrid SUVs—the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. These models are expected to achieve a fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon, a notable improvement over previous generations. In the coming year, GM plans to equip a large number of Cadillac Escalade SUVs, as well as Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, with the same technology. Additionally, the Baltimore plant will supply dual-mode transmissions for mid-sized SUVs like the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango, broadening the reach of this innovative system across multiple brands and vehicle segments. This development underscores GM’s growing investment in hybrid technology and its vision for a more sustainable future in the automotive industry.
