Universal epoch-making dual-mode oil-electric hybrid transmission off-line
On October 29, local time, the general-purpose two-mode hybrid transmission officially entered mass production at GM's Baltimore, Maryland plant. This significant milestone marks a major step forward in the company's hybrid technology development. The transmission was originally co-developed by General Motors, BMW, and DaimlerChrysler before the companies went their separate ways.
The same day, GM celebrated the successful rollout of its first dual-mode hybrid transmission at the Baltimore facility with a special ceremony. According to GM, 78% of the components used in the transmission were sourced from American suppliers, highlighting the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing and supporting the U.S. supply chain.
The new dual-mode transmission will first be installed in GM's top-selling hybrid SUVs—the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. These models are expected to achieve a fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon, significantly improving efficiency without sacrificing performance. In the coming year, GM plans to equip a large number of Cadillac Escalade SUVs, as well as Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, with the same advanced transmission system.
Additionally, the Baltimore plant will also supply dual-mode transmissions for medium-sized SUVs such as the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango, expanding the reach of this innovative technology across different vehicle segments. With this new production capability, GM is reinforcing its position as a leader in hybrid and alternative powertrain solutions, while also contributing to the broader goal of reducing fuel consumption and emissions in the automotive industry.
