Daqing drilling tool fatigue testing technology fills a gap in China
The Drilling Tools Branch of Daqing Oilfield Drilling Technology Co., Ltd. has pioneered the development of "Drilling Tool Thread Stress Fatigue Testing Technology" in China, addressing a critical gap in domestic drilling equipment inspection. This innovative approach enables the quantitative detection of stress-related fatigue defects in threaded connections of oil drilling tools, significantly enhancing safety and reducing the risk of thread failure accidents.
Thread breakage is one of the most severe and costly failures in drilling operations, often leading to expensive downtime and potential safety hazards. Traditionally, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection have been used to identify visible defects. However, these techniques are limited in their ability to detect early-stage stress fatigue, which can lead to sudden and catastrophic failures.
Through extensive field experience, the company identified that stress fatigue zones at threaded joints are the primary cause of fractures. When stress accumulates beyond a certain threshold, the thread can fail without warning. The newly developed technology allows for early evaluation of threads before visible damage occurs, enabling the identification of hidden risks and preventing failures due to stress fatigue.
Research on this technology began in early 2006, and over the past two years, more than 500 drill collars—equivalent to over 1,000 internal and external threads—have been tested. During on-site inspections, the system successfully detected fatigue sources multiple times, achieving a 100% repetition rate. Mechanical property tests were also conducted to ensure the reliability of the process.
To further validate the results, the company tracked the performance of the tested tools, and so far, none have shown any quality issues. Based on theoretical analysis and real-world application, the team developed a specialized method and testing procedure for stress fatigue detection, along with an advanced stress evaluation software. This software has achieved over 96% accuracy in assessing thread fatigue, and the success rate in identifying potential fracture points is also above 96%.
The implementation of this technology has expanded the range of non-destructive testing methods available in China’s petroleum industry, raised overall detection standards, and enhanced both the safety and economic efficiency of drilling operations. It represents a major step forward in ensuring the reliability and longevity of critical drilling components.
