Skokie’s Pirsch Snorkel

Jeff Rudolph stumbled upon a nostalgic piece of Skokie’s fire department history.

This is Skokie’s old ’69 Pirsch Snorkel, which was heading to a scrapyard in Wisconsin. It was picked up from Jim Carew’s place in Bristol, WI. After being retired in the mid-90s, it was sold to Wally Mitchell and then to Jim. The truck was used for installing radio towers and antennas. Notice the missing basket and any other equipment that might have been on it. Also take a look at the trailer it was being hauled on. The driver only made it one mile before a state trooper pulled him over for an unsafe load.

In other Skokie Fire Department news, Jeff shared the following updates:

  • Tower 16 has returned from its refurbishment by Pierce but is not yet back in service.
  • Engine 17’s Pierce Saber is currently in Tipton, IN at RPI for several months undergoing major repairs and upgrades.

It's always interesting to see how these historic pieces of equipment are preserved or lost over time. While this particular Snorkel didn’t make it to a museum, it’s still a reminder of the past and the people who kept Skokie safe for decades.
