2 Rescued from 2-Alarm fire in Oak Park 5-7-15

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

Firefighters rescued a 6-year-old boy and an adult man after a fire broke out in a two-flat building in Oak Park overnight. The two were found unconscious inside one of the apartments. The boy was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, while the man was transported to West Suburban Medical Center.

Oak Park Fire Chief Thomas Ebsen stated that both individuals were responsive upon arrival, but their medical conditions remain undisclosed at this time.

The fire department received the call around 11:30 p.m. and arrived at the scene on North Humphrey Avenue, where the entire back of the two-story building was already fully engulfed in flames, according to Ebsen.

John Dansby, a neighbor, said he started pounding on the door and was soon joined by others. Julius White Sr., who lives just a few doors away, mentioned that about five or six neighbors rushed to the scene to assist. They were told that three people lived on the second floor, and one man managed to break through the window of the door leading to the upper level.

"We went upstairs, and they were still asleep," Dansby recalled. "It was extremely smoky. I’ve never seen anything like it before."

A woman managed to escape the building, but the boy and the man were trapped inside. Due to heavy smoke, firefighters and police were unable to reach them initially, Ebsen said. As the fire spread quickly, it also reached the neighboring building, complicating the rescue efforts.

"Because we spent some time rescuing those two, the fire got a strong hold," Ebsen explained. "Both buildings are old wood-frame structures, so the fire spread very fast. It looks like both will be a total loss, with roofs collapsing on both."

The fire department escalated the response to a second alarm, bringing in crews from nine different departments. A total of about 40 firefighters were on the scene, and the fire was finally under control roughly an hour after the initial arrival.
