2 Rescued from 2-Alarm fire in Oak Park 5-7-15

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

Firefighters rescued a 6-year-old boy and an adult man after a fire broke out in a two-flat building in Oak Park overnight. Both were found unconscious inside one of the apartments. The boy was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, while the man was transported to West Suburban Medical Center.

Oak Park Fire Chief Thomas Ebsen stated that both individuals were responsive, but their current conditions remain unknown. Crews arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. on North Humphrey Avenue, where they discovered the entire back of the building fully engulfed in flames.

John Dansby, who was among the first to respond, began knocking on the door and was soon joined by several neighbors. Julius White Sr., a local resident, mentioned that about five or six neighbors rushed to the home to assist. They were told that three people lived in the second-floor unit, and one man managed to break through the window leading to the upper level.

"We went upstairs, and they were still asleep," Dansby said. "It was extremely smoky—something I’ve never seen before."

A woman managed to escape the fire, but the boy and the man were trapped inside. Due to heavy smoke, firefighters and police were unable to reach them initially. As the fire spread quickly, it reached the neighboring building, complicating the rescue efforts.

"Because we spent time on the rescue, the fire got a strong hold," Ebsen explained. "Both buildings are old wood-frame structures, so the fire spread rapidly. It looks like both will be a total loss, with the roofs collapsing."

The fire was escalated to a second alarm, bringing in crews from nine different fire departments. Approximately 40 firefighters responded to the scene, and the fire was finally under control about an hour after the initial arrival.
