Zion 3rd Alarm Fire & Haz Mat Box 6-17-12 (update)
More about the fire in Zion on Sunday at Maine Plastics. The incident occurred in the outdoor yard of a recycling facility that compacts various paper goods and materials into large bundles for reuse by others. According to the company’s website:
>Maine Plastics is a buyer, seller, and recycler of plastics, metals, paper scrap, and uncommon materials. We also offer baling, grinding, material separation, metal detection, and removal services at our plants nationwide.
First responders arrived around 7 AM, and the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. They also requested the Quad 2 Foam Unit (a 1992 Oshkosh T-3000) from Round Lake. About an hour later, a second alarm was called for additional resources. Winthrop Harbor and Zion trucks were deployed with elevated master streams on the north side of the facility, while the Antioch tower ladder was set up on the south. When the ARFF arrived, the Zion truck was repositioned, and the water supply for Winthrop Harbor was redirected to the ARFF.
The fire appeared to be coming from the industrial building at 1817 Kenosha Road, but in reality, the flames were outside behind the structure. Multiple images captured the intense smoke and activity as firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control.
As the situation escalated, a third alarm was called, followed by a Haz Mat Box Alarm to assess the risks associated with burning plastics and other materials. A wide range of units from across the region responded, including engines, trucks, ambulances, squads, and special duty units such as the Quad 2 Foam Unit, MABAS Air 3, and several Haz Mat teams.
To support the operation, Newport Township Engine 1413 laid approximately 2,500 feet of 5-inch LDH hose to a nearby pond to begin a drafting operation. Engines from Paris (WI) and Pleasant Prairie (WI) were placed in-line to boost pressure for this long-distance water supply.
Units from five different MABAS Divisions (3, 4, 5, 101, and 102), five counties (Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kenosha, and Racine), and two states (Illinois and Wisconsin) were involved in the response.
Even after the bulk of the fire was extinguished, flare-ups continued from the debris piles, requiring ongoing efforts from the ARFF and other crews. Firefighters used elevated master streams, foam, and water to keep the area under control.
