The first methanol and dimethyl ether long-distance pipeline will be built

With the rapid expansion of methanol and dimethyl ether production in Inner Mongolia, the region has become a key player in China's chemical industry. To address the challenges of transporting these liquid chemicals over long distances, authorities are planning to establish the country's first dedicated pipeline network for methanol and dimethyl ether. These pipelines are expected to transport the products directly from Inner Mongolia to the Bohai Bay region, significantly improving logistics efficiency. According to information released by the Economic Commission of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on March 23, the project is currently in the planning and feasibility study phase. Experts highlight that the region already has an annual methanol production capacity of 2 million tons, with more than 10 million tons under construction. This surge in output has intensified the need for efficient transportation solutions, as over 90% of the region’s chemical products are exported both domestically and internationally. Transporting hazardous materials like methanol and dimethyl ether via traditional means—such as rail or road—poses significant safety risks and high costs. As a result, the local government is working on developing dedicated pipelines and heavy-duty transport corridors to coastal ports, integrating them into broader infrastructure plans. Preliminary work has already begun, signaling a strategic shift toward safer and more cost-effective distribution methods. Experts estimate that the current transportation cost for dimethyl ether is between 0.5 and 0.9 yuan per ton, but this could drop to around 0.2 yuan per ton per kilometer if transported through pipelines. With China's growing demand for methanol and dimethyl ether—projected to reach 15.8 million tons for dimethyl ether and 40 million tons globally for methanol by 2010—the economic benefits of pipeline transport will be substantial. Moreover, with rising oil prices, methanol-based fuels are expected to gain momentum, further increasing methanol consumption. When considering its use in producing olefins, acetic acid, and other derivatives, the demand for methanol could reach 20 million tons by 2010. Thus, establishing a direct pipeline system from Inner Mongolia to eastern China will not only enhance transportation efficiency but also unlock the full economic potential of these critical chemical resources.
