Alcohol ether fuel standards are stepping up
As of now, six industrial and national standards related to alcohol ether fuels are currently being developed, finalized, or officially released. According to Liu Jisheng, the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Alcohol Ether Fuel and Alcohol Ether Clean Vehicles Professional Committee, since June this year, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued the "Notice on the Release of the Second Batch of National Standards Revision Plans for 2007," which includes alcohol ether-related standards. The development of fuel standards has been actively progressing. By November 30, 2007, two important standards—“DME for Town Gas†in the construction industry and “DME Ether†in the chemical industry—were officially announced. Meanwhile, national standards for denatured fuel methanol, M15 methanol gasoline for vehicles, high-proportion methanol gasoline, and dimethyl ether for town gas were still under development.
At the same time, five provinces and regions—Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang—have already established local standards for methanol fuel and methanol gasoline, covering vehicle fuels such as M10, M15, M25, and M30. According to the requirements set by the National Standardization Committee, the draft for the “High-Proportion Vehicle Methanol Gasoline†standard must be completed before December 31, 2007, while the consultation draft for “Denatured Fuel Methanol†was finalized by June 2008. The draft for “M15 Methanol for Vehicles†was completed in January 2008, with the approval draft finalized in June of that year.
In 2008, the National Committee for Alcohol Ether Fuel and Alcohol Ether Clean Vehicles will focus on coordinating regional standards based on the needs of joint regional promotion efforts. For example, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Sichuan represent the western region, while Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Zhejiang reflect the eastern region. Other areas, including Northeast China, South China, and Southwest China, will also be considered. Additionally, as the development of dimethyl ether vehicles progresses, the application of national standards for dimethyl ether vehicle fuels will be explored. Alongside the ongoing methanol fuel standards, the committee also plans to address the need for national and industry standards for methanol refueling facilities and methanol-powered vehicles in 2008.
