Alcohol ether fuel standards are stepping up

As of now, six industrial and national standards related to alcohol ether fuels are currently being developed, finalized, or officially released. According to Liu Jisheng, the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Alcohol Ether Fuel and Alcohol Ether Clean Vehicles Professional Committee, since June this year, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued the "Notice on the Release of the Second Batch of National Standards Revision Plans for 2007," which includes alcohol ether-related standards. The development of fuel standards is now in full progress. By November 30, 2007, the construction industry product standard for DME used in town gas and the chemical industry product standard for DME ether had been officially announced. Meanwhile, the national standards for denatured fuel methanol, M15 methanol gasoline for vehicles, high-proportion methanol gasoline, and dimethyl ether for town gas were still under development. So far, five provinces and regions—Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang—have established local standards for methanol fuel and methanol gasoline, covering vehicle fuels such as M10, M15, M25, and M30. According to the requirements from the National Standardization Committee, the task of formulating the "high-proportion vehicle methanol gasoline" standard must be completed by December 31, 2007, with the draft for approval finalized. The "denatured fuel methanol" standard was expected to have its consultation draft completed by June 2008, and the draft for the "M15 Methanol for Vehicles" standard was completed in January 2008, with the approval draft finalized by June. In 2008, the National Committee for Alcohol Ether Fuel and Alcohol Ether Clean Vehicles will coordinate regional standards based on the needs of joint regional promotion efforts. For instance, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Sichuan represent the western region, while Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Zhejiang belong to the eastern region. Other areas, including the Northeast, South China, and Southwest, are also involved. Additionally, with the development of dimethyl ether vehicles, the application of national standards for dimethyl ether fuel is being considered. Beyond the ongoing methanol fuel standards, in 2008, it was also crucial to address the application of national and industry standards for methanol refueling facilities and methanol-powered vehicles. This comprehensive approach aims to support the broader adoption and safe use of alcohol ether fuels across different regions and sectors.
