Worker trapped in trench in Niles 7-19-14 (pt 3)
Last night, there was quite an event over on the 8500 block of North Olcott Avenue in Niles. It seems that during a construction project in front of a house, a worker got trapped in a trench collapse. From what I gathered, Niles Fire Department responded with their technical rescue team, and they quickly set up some shoring to stabilize the area.
When I arrived, I noticed their aerial truck was already on the scene, though it looked like the hoisting equipment wasn’t yet in use. There was a noticeable “sewer sucker†machine being used to clear debris, which is often necessary in situations like this to avoid further complications. I could see that the victim was eventually freed after about 90 minutes, thankfully in relatively good condition.
As someone who enjoys capturing these moments, I managed to snap some great photos of the operation. You can see the firefighters working diligently, along with the impressive equipment they brought in to handle the situation. One particularly striking image shows the Pierce aerial ladder truck positioned perfectly to assist in the rescue effort. Another shot highlights the teamwork between the fire department and a local towing company, who were assisting with specialized airbags to help lift heavy debris.
The Glenview Fire Department also sent support, bringing in additional resources to ensure everything ran smoothly. It’s always inspiring to witness how different departments come together in moments like these, combining their expertise and resources to make a real difference.
