Hinsdale exploring options for 9-1-1 dispatch

An article in *The Doings Hinsdale* highlights the growing necessity for Hinsdale to reconsider its emergency dispatch arrangements. Local officials are actively searching for a more affordable and dependable solution for handling 911 calls. Hinsdale's decision to disengage from its current emergency dispatch center comes after years of reliance on Southwest Central Dispatch, which began in 2010. At the time, joining the regional dispatch center was financially appealing since it cost Hinsdale less than two-thirds of what running an in-house system would have required. However, recent developments are prompting a shift in priorities. Rising operational costs, coupled with dissatisfaction with the service, have prompted officials to explore alternative options. Currently, Hinsdale residents see a 50-cent charge on their landline bills and 73 cents for wireless services, both of which are earmarked for DuPage County’s Emergency Telephone System Board. While Cook County members of Southwest Central Dispatch receive these fees directly, DuPage County has declined to forward Hinsdale’s portion to the regional center. To make up for lost revenue, Hinsdale currently contributes nearly $34,000 annually for landline users, on top of the $23,000 monthly subscription fee. Officials are concerned that Southwest may soon demand additional funding for wireless services, potentially reaching up to $150,000 per year. Adding to these concerns, Southwest, based in Palos Heights, plans to construct a new facility. Should Hinsdale remain affiliated with them, the village could face financial liability tied to the long-term debt associated with the new building. In light of these challenges, Hinsdale is contemplating a switch to DuPage Public Safety Communications (DuComm). According to Police Chief Bradley Bloom, DuComm offers a more resilient system and advanced technology. Moreover, residents are already funding these programs through existing 911 surcharges on their phone bills. "The reliability and modernity of DuComm’s infrastructure stand out," Bloom noted. "It’s clear we need a change that aligns better with our needs and budget." The memo sent to the Village Board echoes similar sentiments, emphasizing concerns over the current system’s equipment reliability and backup capabilities. As Hinsdale moves forward, officials hope to find a solution that ensures seamless emergency response while optimizing taxpayer dollars. The decision remains pending, but the search for a better fit continues to gain momentum. *Thanks, Dan.*
