Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com: The city of Woodstock has taken a major step toward streamlining emergency response by approving an intergovernmental agreement to merge with the McHenry Police Department dispatch center. This move is expected to save the city nearly $350,000 annually, as operating costs for the current Woodstock dispatch center are about $856,000 per year, while the new system is projected to cost only $502,000 in the first year. In addition to the annual savings, the city will make two one-time payments during the transition: approximately $144,000 for new dispatch equipment and $189,000 in severance for Woodstock dispatchers whose positions will be eliminated. These costs, while significant, are seen as a necessary investment for long-term efficiency. Woodstock Police Chief Robert Lowen acknowledged the challenges of the change, noting that the city will no longer have 24/7 dispatch staff on-site at the police department. He also expressed concern that new dispatchers may not be as familiar with local streets and neighborhoods. However, he added that over time, the consolidated McHenry County Northeastern Regional Communications Center (NERCOMM) will become more attuned to the needs of the community. NERCOMM currently serves several agencies, including McHenry, Johnsburg, and McCullom Lake police departments, as well as fire and rescue services in Marengo and McHenry Township. It's also expanding to include Harvard and additional services in response to a state mandate aimed at reducing the number of dispatch centers across the region. Currently, eight full-time and two part-time dispatchers work at the Woodstock center. Of these, one will move to a records clerk position within the police department, while five will transition to NERCOMM. The remaining three positions will be eliminated as part of the restructuring. The city of Woodstock receives about $84,000 annually from the Woodstock Fire Rescue District for dispatching services. Under the new agreement, the district’s costs are expected to rise to $120,000, prompting the city to offer financial support. For the next five years, the city will subsidize the fire district by up to $36,000 each year, according to Finance Director Paul Christensen. “We’re seeing real savings from this agreement, and we’re willing to share some of that with the fire district to help them manage the increase,†Christensen said. The decision was unanimously approved by the Woodstock City Council during its meeting on Tuesday, marking a key milestone in the city’s efforts to improve public safety while managing taxpayer dollars more efficiently.
