Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com: It's hard to believe that after nearly 70 years, the Krohn brothers still haven't settled who was the first to join the New Lenox Fire Department. But on Wednesday, they came together at Fire Station 1—bringing with them a piece of local history. In February 1939, the brothers were just kids in Orland Park when they spotted smoke in the distance. A short while later, their mom arrived and told them their house was gone. The family relocated to Cedar Road in New Lenox, and soon after, they began volunteering at the fire station. When a call came in, volunteers would rush to the station by siren. For Dale, it meant grabbing his bike and heading to Church Street to set off the alarm. "I worked at Otto’s Garage, so I’d run over there, hop on my bike, and head to the station," he said. "Guys would show up and take the equipment." Back then, most calls were about burning barns or grass fires along the Rock Island Line. Gene served from 1948 to 1975, Dale from 1950 to 1964, Wade from 1952 to 1964, and Glen joined in 1960 and continues to serve as a fire trustee today. "When I joined, there was a rack of gear—every raincoat was size 48 and every boot was size 12," Gene laughed. "I could even fit slippers in those boots!" Glen and Dale worked at Otto’s Garage, while Wade was at the hardware store next door. Gene worked the day shift at Caterpillar in Joliet, but had a dedicated “fire phone†line in his home for 20 years to handle emergency calls at night. Each brother has countless stories of life in the firehouse—some dangerous, others almost comical. Glen once used a swimming pool to draw water during a house fire. Wade remembered letting a barn burn because the truck kept sliding on icy roads. Dale still recalls a fire so intense it melted the lights on the fire truck. And Gene owes his life to Ike Moore, known as “Mr. Five-By-Five,†who pulled him and another firefighter out of a burning farmhouse basement. "We all followed the same idea: help someone who needed it," Gene added. At the end of their meeting last week, Gene gave Glen a special gift to present to the department—a relic from the very first fire truck in New Lenox: the original red light from a 1941 Ford equipped with a pump. Glen handed it over to Chief Steve Engledow. "Looks like it still works. There’s a lot of history here," Engledow said as the brothers left the station.
