Structural Collapse in Long Grove 4-9-12
The Long Grove Fire District was called on Monday to assess a home in unincorporated Palatine after a vehicle had previously crashed into the side of the structure. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered significant damage to a corner of the brick house and an attached enclosed deck that was beginning to collapse away from the building. The situation required immediate attention to prevent further structural compromise.
A team of emergency responders, including units from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Palatine Rural Ambulance 36, and squads from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, and Buffalo Grove, arrived on scene. Structural technicians were also dispatched to stabilize the area. In addition, Divisions 4 & 5 of the MABAS system provided a roll-off container filled with extra lumber to support the ongoing efforts.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images of the operation. One photo showed firefighters measuring for bracing, while another highlighted the use of Ellis clamps to secure the deck against a nearby tree. Workers were seen cutting wood as part of the bracing process, and additional supports were added to prevent further damage.
The response took less than an hour, during which time the deck was successfully stabilized, reducing the risk of further harm to the house. A final image showed the completed bracing system in place, demonstrating the effectiveness of the quick action taken by the teams involved. Another shot captured the MABAS lumber trailer arriving at the scene, highlighting the coordination between agencies. Overall, the incident showcased the importance of swift and coordinated emergency response in preventing potential disasters.
