Flyability launches Inspector 3.0

April 20, 2021 – Flyability has introduced a groundbreaking software called Inspector 3.0, designed to help inspectors quickly and accurately identify the location of defects found during inspections.

Flyability, a leader in remote internal inspection solutions, is proud to announce the release of Inspector 3.0, a new tool that allows users to precisely locate defects discovered during inspections using the Elios 2 drone. After a successful beta phase involving over 150 users, the software is now available to all Elios 2 users worldwide.

"Inspector 3.0 marks a significant step toward our mission of eliminating the need for humans to enter dangerous confined spaces," said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. "Being able to see exactly where an issue is located within an asset improves inspector efficiency and helps clients get more value from their inspection data."

In traditional manual inspections, inspectors often know exactly where a defect is because they are right there in front of it. However, when using remote visual inspection (RVI) tools like the Elios 2, locating defects becomes much more challenging due to the lack of GPS or indoor positioning systems.

Without built-in location data, inspectors have had to rely on a mix of barometric readings, maps, blueprints, and video reference points—making the process time-consuming and error-prone. But with Inspector 3.0, this is no longer the case.

The software generates a sparse point cloud based on data collected by the Elios 2, allowing inspectors to clearly see where each defect is located within an asset. This process doesn’t require expensive LiDAR equipment or lengthy photogrammetry processing times, making it both efficient and cost-effective.

"We often know something is damaged, but not exactly where," said Simon Kumm, a Confined Space Inspections Expert at InspecDrone GmbH. "Inspector 3.0 solves that problem perfectly."

Accurate location data is essential in maintenance operations. For instance, if a pipe in a wastewater system needs repair, digging the wrong spot could lead to costly delays and wasted effort. Having precise spatial information ensures that work is done efficiently and correctly.

It also plays a key role in coordinating different teams involved in maintenance. Scaffolders need to know where to set up access, and repair crews must understand the exact locations of defects to plan their work effectively. With Inspector 3.0, this coordination becomes much smoother.

"The localization feature in Inspector 3.0 was exactly what we were missing," said Thibault Chatillon, Innovation and Development Manager at Setec. "Our customers have been asking for this for a long time. Now, I can show them exactly where the issue is."
