Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11
This morning, the Long Grove Fire Department got a call about a house fire at 1889 Checker Road. Interestingly, the department had been using the vacant house for training purposes over the last two weeks, with participation from eight other departments conducting numerous interior drills each day. The training concluded yesterday, and the fire department is set to burn the house down this Saturday morning, with local residents invited to attend.
Initially, the call was delayed by approximately 20 minutes this morning because a neighbor assumed the fire department might still be conducting training. Realizing it was an unattended fire, she called it in, prompting Long Grove to respond with its full force, including Tanker 55, since the area lacks hydrants. The first responders saw smoke rising shortly after leaving the station, and the initial report indicated a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had been stored.
When firefighters arrived, the garage was already down, and the pallet storage area was fully engulfed in flames. Tankers were dispatched from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake to ensure the structure didn’t collapse entirely. Engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine, along with an ambulance from Arlington Heights for rehab, also joined the efforts. Much of the house was salvaged and is scheduled to be burned on Saturday.
Photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were present to document the fire. As the situation was under control, firefighters applied foam to smoldering areas to save water. The pallet pile continued to smolder, requiring hot spot management.
A full gallery of images from the fire can be viewed online. Additionally, some photos from Larry Shapiro’s coverage of the training sessions held over the past two weeks are available in separate galleries. During the training, Buffalo Grove’s reserve engine was utilized, with multiple daily exercises focusing on interior fires and victim searches. By the final day, the intensity of the fires had increased significantly.
