Google and Facebook in huge renewable energy deals

Google has once again emphasized the long-term importance of solar power as a major renewable energy source through a groundbreaking deal, which is reportedly the largest renewable energy agreement ever made by a corporation. This significant pact encompasses 18 separate solar and wind contracts, sourcing energy from projects spanning the globe. With this new arrangement, Google's green energy capacity is expected to increase by 40%, adding another 1.6 gigawatts of clean electricity to support its operations. According to the company, this is equivalent to installing over a million solar rooftops. In a statement, Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted that the company had already achieved a milestone in 2017 by matching 100% of its energy consumption with renewable sources. Following these latest wind and solar agreements, Google’s total renewable energy supply will surpass 5.5 gigawatts. Unlike previous deals that relied solely on existing solar farms, Google has chosen to enter into agreements that will drive the creation of brand-new projects worldwide. These initiatives will involve the installation of millions of solar panels and the construction of hundreds of new wind turbines. Pichai emphasized that these long-term commitments would help bring additional renewable energy to the grids where Google operates. He stated, "Bringing incremental renewable energy to the grids where we consume energy is a critical component of pursuing 24×7 carbon-free energy for all of our operations." Facebook hasn't been left behind in the race for sustainable energy. The social media giant has also entered into a massive renewable energy deal, this time focusing on wind power to meet its substantial server demands. Facebook has signed a 200-megawatt supply agreement with Aviator Wind, which is expected to become the largest single-site wind farm in the United States. Closer to home, innovative technologies like solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are fueling the social energy revolution. Savvy consumers are now connecting their solar panels to energy storage batteries, enabling them to store surplus energy and even sell it back to the grid. This technology not only allows users to bypass traditional energy providers but also offers the potential to save up to 70% on energy costs.
