Differences between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2

Key Differences Between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 Pipes

API 5L pipes, whether seamless or welded, are available in two product specification levels: PSL1 and PSL2. These two specifications differ significantly in terms of chemical composition, manufacturing processes, mechanical properties, heat treatment, documentation, and traceability. Understanding the distinctions between them is crucial when selecting the right pipe for a specific application.

PSL2 Offers Higher Quality Than PSL1

PSL stands for "Product Specification Level." The API 5L standard includes two levels: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 represents a higher quality standard than PSL1. It not only has more rigorous inspection requirements but also stricter criteria for chemical composition and mechanical strength. Therefore, when ordering API 5L pipes, it's essential to clearly specify the grade, size, and the required product specification level—either PSL1 or PSL2.

PSL2 is more stringent in several areas, including chemical properties, tensile strength, non-destructive testing (NDT), and impact testing. This makes PSL2 suitable for more demanding applications where reliability and performance are critical.

Different Impact Test Requirements for PSL1 and PSL2

For API 5L PSL1 pipes, impact testing is not required. However, for PSL2 pipes (except for grade X80), an impact test at 0°C must be conducted. The average values for the impact energy (Akv) should meet the following criteria:

  • Longitudinal: ≥ 41 J
  • Transverse: ≥ 27 J

For all sizes of API 5L X80 PSL2 pipes, a 0°C impact test is mandatory. The minimum average Akv values are:

  • Longitudinal: ≥ 101 J
  • Transverse: ≥ 68 J

Differences in Hydrostatic Testing Between PSL1 and PSL2

In API 5L standards, each individual pipe in PSL2 must undergo a hydrostatic test. Unlike some other standards, hydrostatic testing cannot be replaced by non-destructive testing (NDT) in API 5L specifications. This is one of the key differences between the API 5L standard and some Chinese standards. In contrast, PSL1 does not require NDT for every single pipe, while PSL2 mandates NDT on a per-pipe basis.

Chemical Composition Variations Between PSL1 and PSL2

The chemical composition and mechanical properties of PSL1 and PSL2 pipes also differ. For example, API 5L PSL2 imposes strict limits on the carbon equivalent (CEQ). If the carbon content is above 0.12%, a different CEQ calculation must be used. Additionally, PSL2 pipes have maximum tensile strength limits, which are not specified in PSL1. These details can be found in sections 9.2 and 9.3 of the API 5L specification.

Choosing between PSL1 and PSL2 depends on the project’s requirements, environmental conditions, and the level of safety and performance needed. Always consult the relevant API 5L documentation to ensure compliance and optimal selection.
