Wheeling 2nd Alarm EMS Box 1-31-12
Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Wheeling Fire Department received a call about workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing facility. Upon arrival at 750 Northgate Parkway, first responders detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and immediately evacuated the building. As they worked to identify the source, which turned out to be a piece of machinery, one worker was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Soon after, several more employees began experiencing symptoms, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be activated for additional emergency services.
This led to the arrival of ambulances from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove. The scene quickly became busy as multiple patients were treated, with Wheeling Ambulance 42 serving as the triage unit. Firefighters and paramedics worked efficiently to manage the situation while ensuring the safety of all involved. Nearly 100 workers waited outside as firefighters ventilated the building to lower CO levels to safe standards.
As the number of affected workers increased, an additional four ambulances were dispatched, bringing the total to eight. These came from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines, in addition to two units from Wheeling. The EMS Box Alarm was escalated to the second level, showing the severity of the incident. Several images captured by local photographer Larry Shapiro show the response in action, including ambulances arriving, patients being transported, and firefighters monitoring the site.
Eventually, 13 workers were taken to four different area hospitals. Once all patients had been safely transported, the Box Alarm was lifted, and remaining ambulances were released. Meanwhile, neighboring Buffalo Grove responded to a small fire just a block away, assisted by an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12.
