Wheeling 2nd Alarm EMS Box 1-31-12

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Wheeling Fire Department received a call about workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing plant. Upon arrival at 750 Northgate Parkway, firefighters detected extremely high carbon monoxide (CO) levels and immediately evacuated the building. They began ventilating the area while working to identify the source, which was traced to a piece of machinery. Initially, one worker reported symptoms and was taken to a nearby hospital. Soon after, several more employees began experiencing similar issues, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be issued for additional ambulances. Units from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove responded to the scene. As the situation escalated, over 100 workers gathered outside waiting for the CO levels to drop to safe levels. The Box Alarm was temporarily lifted, but more workers arrived at the triage area, leading to its reactivation at the second level. Additional ambulances were dispatched from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines, in addition to two Wheeling units. Larry Shapiro was on-site and captured several images documenting the response. One photo shows Wheeling Ambulance 42 serving as the triage center. Another features the fire chief gathering patient information, while others depict paramedics preparing to transport patients and firefighters switching air tanks to continue monitoring the ventilation process. Ambulances from Northbrook and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods arrived shortly after the alarm was raised. A worker was escorted to a Northbrook ambulance for transport to Glenbrook Hospital, and another was handed off to Buffalo Grove firefighters. Des Plaines Ambulance 71 left with two patients, while workers approached Glenview Ambulance 8 for transportation to Lutheran General Hospital. Eventually, 13 workers were transported to four different hospitals. Once all patients were accounted for, the Box Alarm was officially called off, and the remaining ambulances were released. Meanwhile, neighboring Buffalo Grove responded to a small fire at an industrial building just a block away. They were assisted by an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12.
