2-Alarm fire in Waukegan, 11-22-15

I just got back from covering a pretty intense two-alarm fire that broke out in a three-story apartment building located at 583 Lakehurst Road. The scene was chaotic, with flames shooting high into the night sky. I managed to capture some photos that really capture the devastation left behind. Here's one shot showing the aftermath of the fire - it’s absolutely gut-wrenching to see the damage. You can really tell how much effort will be needed to rebuild this place. [Insert image] Another angle here gives you a better sense of the scale of destruction. It's hard to believe that just hours before, people were living their normal lives inside these walls. [Insert image] There’s something haunting about the emptiness left behind after such a disaster. This next photo really drives that point home. [Insert image] The firefighters did an incredible job containing the blaze, but not before it had spread significantly. Here’s a closer look at one of the brave firefighters surveying the damage. [Insert image] In some ways, the aftermath almost looks peaceful, but then you notice all the charred remains and realize what a massive undertaking recovery will be. [Insert image] This last photo really captures the teamwork involved as multiple crews worked together to bring the situation under control. [Insert image] It’s always tough to witness communities come together like this, but it’s also inspiring to see neighbors rally around each other in times of crisis. If anyone has photos or stories they’d like to share from tonight’s events, I’d love to hear them! Let’s hope everyone affected finds support and resources during this difficult time.
