Your lungs are healthy: When it blows on your phone

In Seattle, researchers have developed a new tool to monitor lung health. This does not require any new hardware. All you need is a smartphone.

Today, patients with chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis or asthma have been inconvenient to monitor their respiratory tracts. Instead, they have a special device called a spirometer because they can go to the doctor's office for testing. Therefore, in the past two years, graduate students at the University of Washington in Seattle have been working on developing an application that accurately measures lung function, but it requires additional hardware, and the hardware of existing applications is entertainment. In other words, they have been working hard to put spirometers in smart phones. Now, researchers in electrical engineering and computer science have published their SpiroSmart app, which is a portable spirometer that they tested on 52 "mostly healthy" volunteers. Basically, the researchers simulated the tubes of the human trachea and vocal tract system, which can replace the traditional spirometer and use the iPhone4S's microphone to analyze the frequency of sound waves.

The researchers wrote on the SpiroSmart website: Through analysis of lip reverberation, we were able to monitor lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and more. The team has received funding from the Kurt Foundation and conducted more clinical trials from patients. A simple and fun game on the phone, I believe users will not mind playing it at regular intervals.
