Multiple fatalities at Glenview crash 10-15-13
This afternoon, emergency services including the Glenview Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a serious accident at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street. The incident involved a fully loaded garbage truck from the Village of Skokie colliding with an SUV. Witnesses report that the SUV appeared to cross the garbage truck's path just as it approached the intersection. The garbage truck, equipped with a large plow assembly on its front, pushed the smaller vehicle along the parkway before the car flipped over and landed on its roof.
The truck eventually came to rest atop the crushed vehicle, leading to a rapidly spreading fire that engulfed both the cab of the truck and the remains of the car below. Tragically, three individuals were trapped inside the SUV and did not survive the crash. Fortunately, the garbage truck's driver managed to escape without injury, quickly freeing himself from the wreckage.
Upon arrival, Glenview Engine 6 took immediate action, deploying a high-pressure stream of water from their deck gun to control the flames before switching to a handheld hose to completely douse the fire. Firefighters also applied a layer of foam to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished.
An area resident, attempting to help with a portable fire extinguisher, was forced back due to the intense heat radiating from the inferno. Nearby, Tray Cashman, a neighbor who resides close by, recorded footage of Engine 6's arrival and firefighting efforts.
