Multiple fatalities at Glenview crash 10-15-13
This afternoon, emergency services in Glenview responded to a serious accident involving a garbage truck and an SUV at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street. The incident occurred when the fully loaded garbage truck, originating from the Village of Skokie and equipped with a large plow attachment on its front, collided with the other vehicle that had crossed its path. In the aftermath of the collision, the garbage truck pushed the SUV along the parkway, causing it to roll over and end up on its roof. Tragically, the truck came to rest atop the car, leading to a fire that engulfed both the truck's cab and the vehicle.
Initially, reports indicated an undetermined number of occupants were trapped in the car, but it has since been confirmed that three individuals were inside and unfortunately did not survive. The truck driver managed to extricate himself from the wreckage without sustaining any injuries.
Upon arrival, Glenview Engine 6 quickly took action, using tank water from the deck gun to douse the flames before switching to a hand line to completely extinguish the fire. Foam was also applied to ensure the fire was fully contained. An eyewitness who tried to help with a fire extinguisher was forced back due to the intense heat.
