Flyability launches the Elios 3, an indoor LiDAR drone for Industry 4.0
May 19, 2022 – Today, Flyability announced the launch of the Elios 3, a game-changing innovation in the world of industrial inspection. This drone is not just another tool; it’s the world’s first collision-tolerant drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor for indoor 3D mapping. The Elios 3 is powered by a revolutionary new SLAM engine called FlyAware™, which allows it to generate 3D models in real-time while flying. Alongside this impressive tech, Flyability has also released a new version of their software for inspectors, named Inspector 4.0.
Flyability revolutionized confined space inspections back in 2016 with their pioneering products. Now, with the Elios 3, they’re continuing their commitment to advancing technology that keeps humans safe by performing risky inspection tasks remotely.
The Elios 3 was specifically developed to meet the growing demand for dependable inspection tools across various industries. As businesses worldwide embrace drones for inspection purposes, they require equipment that’s simple to use, consistently performs well, and remains stable even in sensitive environments.
Patrick Thévoz, co-founder and CEO of Flyability, shared his excitement about the Elios 3: "This drone offers some of the best stabilization globally, a flexible modular payload system, real-time 3D model generation, and sets the stage for a more autonomous future. For industrial inspections, the Elios 3 is a pivotal component of Industry 4.0, making inspections safer, more efficient, and cost-effective."
Equipped with an Ouster OS0-32 LiDAR sensor, the Elios 3 allows inspectors to gather data necessary for creating high-precision 3D models using software from Flyability's new partner, GeoSLAM. Navigating hard-to-reach or hazardous areas is both challenging and crucial for many industries. By merging advanced confined space drone data capture with 3D geospatial software solutions, Flyability’s collaboration with GeoSLAM empowers professionals to produce detailed point clouds of the most unreachable locations in their workspaces. Additionally, the Elios 3 supports a secondary payload option, enabling users to tailor the device according to their unique requirements.
Powered by Flyability’s innovative FlyAware™ SLAM engine, the Elios 3 converts LiDAR data into 3D models instantly during flight. FlyAware™ also provides unprecedented stability by integrating data from the drone’s three optical cameras and LiDAR sensor to detect even the smallest movements and adjust the flight controller accordingly. This level of stability, combined with user-friendly features, makes operating the Elios 3 straightforward enough for beginners to learn and conduct their first inspection on the same day.
With Flyability’s new Inspector 4.0 software, inspectors can now view Points of Interest (POIs) discovered during inspections within a high-resolution 3D map using the 3D Map Viewer. This capability enables stakeholders to virtually traverse from one POI to another in a digital representation of their assets, offering a clear visualization of detected defects to aid in planning, monitoring, and maintenance activities.
Adrien Briod, CTO of Flyability, described the Elios 3 as the company’s largest project yet: "If you consider the Elios 2 akin to a basic flip phone designed solely for calling, then the Elios 3 is the modern smartphone. It’s built to cater to the distinct needs of each user, allowing customization through payload selection to suit personal preferences, and it evolves alongside advancements in payloads or software updates."
Over the past four years, Flyability’s engineers have dedicated countless hours to R&D and conducted over 200 field missions to gather client feedback, understand their expectations, and refine the technology to deliver the most reliable indoor drone available today.
As part of developing the Elios 3, Flyability collaborated with leading universities worldwide by joining Team Cerberus, which triumphed in DARPA’s multi-year Sub-T challenge for autonomous robotics in underground settings.
