Firefighters sell t-shirts for breast cancer awareness
I just came across this interesting story about firefighters from different departments teaming up to support breast cancer awareness. It seems like a really inspiring initiative! According to the Courier-News, firefighters from six local departments—Algonquin, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Huntley, South Elgin, and West Dundee—are selling specially designed T-shirts to raise funds for breast cancer research and related causes.
The idea started five years ago with Carpentersville firefighters, but this year marks the first time they've collaborated with other departments. Their efforts are being spearheaded by the Carpentersville Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 4790. Last year alone, they managed to raise $4,500, which was donated to breast cancer initiatives at Presence Saint Joseph and Advocate Sherman Hospitals. This year, they're aiming to double that amount, with all proceeds going to Sherman Hospital.
Interestingly, the design for this year's T-shirt was created by Carpentersville firefighter Chad Parker. His design features the fire department patches from all six participating towns, along with a pink ribbon and the IAFF logo. These shirts are available for purchase online in men’s sizes, and they’re also selling hooded sweatshirts. Orders can still be placed until October 31st.
What makes this even more meaningful is the connection between firefighters and breast cancer. As noted in a press release, firefighters are often exposed to carcinogens and other harmful chemicals during their duties, putting them at higher risk for various types of cancer, including breast cancer. In fact, statistics show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, with an estimated 232,340 new cases expected nationwide.
Meanwhile, over in Elgin, firefighters have taken their own approach by selling T-shirts both to the public and within their department. They’ve already sold around 200 shirts, many of which were purchased at a recent open house event. Elgin firefighter Josh Soderberg shared that Lt. Dave Hudik lost his wife, Cindy, to breast cancer back in 2011 after a long battle. This personal experience has made the cause especially significant for the Elgin team. Starting next year, they plan to sell the shirts online as well, hoping to expand their reach and impact.
In addition to selling shirts directly at their station on Lake Marian Road, Carpentersville firefighters are organizing a benefit event at Rosati’s Pizza later this month. For those interested in supporting the multi-departmental effort, you can get in touch with the Carpentersville Firefighters Local 4790 via their website at www.iafflocal4790.org. If you’d like info on the remaining Elgin shirts, you can reach out to Soderberg at 847-736-8980.
It’s great to see how these dedicated firefighters are using their platform to make a difference. Kudos to them for taking action and bringing attention to such an important cause! Thanks for sharing this, Dan—it’s definitely something worth spreading the word about.
