Buffalo Grove water rescues 6-26-13

The area was hit by severe storms on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, bringing heavy rainfall that led to widespread flooding and road closures across many suburbs. Emergency services were overwhelmed as motorists became stranded in deep water and residents found themselves unable to leave their homes. Fire departments from several nearby communities were called in to assist with rescue operations. The Buffalo Grove Fire Department activated a MABAS Box Alarm, requesting swift water rescue teams and boats from divisions 1 and 4. In response, units from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, and Mount Prospect, along with crews from other neighboring departments, arrived with specialized equipment and personnel. Their efforts focused on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace, where rising waters forced evacuations. Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images and a video (to be released soon) documenting the scene. The photos show firefighters navigating flooded streets, rescuing residents, and using inflatable boats to transport those in need. One image highlights a neighborhood submerged under high water, while another shows a resident receiving medical attention after being safely evacuated. The operation continued despite ongoing rain, which fell sporadically throughout the day. Firefighters worked tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, ensuring the safety of all affected individuals. A decontamination process was also carried out following the rescue efforts.
