Netherlands Develops New Method for Efficient Biofuel Production

The University of Twente, the Netherlands, issued a press communique on the 4th that researchers at the university have developed a new method to extract biofuels from agricultural and forestry wastes more efficiently and cheaply.
Dr. Sasha Korsten of the school said that most existing biofuel production methods first use pyrolysis to extract mixed products from biomass feedstocks, and then use the mixed products with hydrogen at high temperatures, high pressures and catalysts. The reaction takes place and the product afterwards can be directly refined to obtain biofuel. The new method focuses on the production stage in which the mixed product reacts with hydrogen, increases the production efficiency through special processes, and reduces the cost by reducing the amount of hydrogen used.
The communique said that the above new method is applicable to the second-generation biofuel production process using straw, trees and other agricultural and forestry waste as raw materials. Compared with the first-generation biofuels produced using sugar and starchy raw materials, there is no situation where biofuels “grabbing with people”.
According to the researchers, the new method has obtained two patents and is expected to make the large-scale production of biofuels a reality.
