Internal Combustion Engine Industry in 2007: Contending to compete for princely competition
In the past year, the Chinese automotive diesel engine industry—once a stronghold for domestic brands—has begun to undergo significant changes. With joint ventures, product collaborations, and the launch of new engines, the market landscape is shifting. How will these developments reshape the future of China's diesel engine industry?
**Lightweight Competition: From 3.0 to 7.2 Liters**
In August 2007, two major events marked a turning point in China’s diesel engine sector. One was Dongfeng Chaochai introducing the U.S.-developed NGD 3.0 diesel engine, while the other was the establishment of a joint venture between Dalian Diesel and German Deutz to produce Deutz 4.0-7.2 liter engines. Both events were met with high expectations. Not only did the leaders from both sides attend, but many domestic automakers also showed up, signaling a shift in the industry.
At the product level, the NGD 3.0 is designed to power urban SUVs, MPVs, premium pickup trucks, and high-end light commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, FAW Dachai and Deutz jointly produced the 1013, 2012, and 2013 series engines, offering 4- and 6-cylinder options that meet the needs of various power applications.
From a strategic perspective, Dachai and Chaochai’s moves are bold. Dongfeng Chaochai’s introduction of the NGD 3.0 has solidified its position in the light-duty diesel engine market. As urban SUVs and MPVs have gained popularity, this new power option is becoming increasingly attractive. Similarly, the Deutz-FAW Dachai joint venture aims to fill a gap in the light commercial vehicle segment, where Dachai previously lacked strong offerings in the 4.0–7.2 liter range.
This shift has created opportunities for other independent brands. According to Wei Anli, Secretary-General of the China Internal Combustion Engine Association, “Although our own-brand diesel engines are not yet strong, we are developing them. In the near future, the power market will belong to us.â€
Companies like Yunnei have already developed D106 and D109 engines for passenger cars and urban SUVs, equivalent in performance to 2.5L and 2.8L gasoline engines. Yuchai, a leading manufacturer, has focused on the 3.0-liter range, with multiple displacement options that dominate its product lineup. Meanwhile, Shanghai Hino and JMC are also expanding their presence in the 3.0–7.2 liter segment.
The growing demand for urban SUVs and MPVs, along with policy-driven trends toward lighter and more efficient engines, has made the 3.0–7.2 liter range highly competitive.
**NGD 3.0 Diesel Engine Features**
The NGD 3.0 is an electronically controlled high-pressure common-rail diesel engine equipped with an ECU. It offers precise fuel injection timing control, variable nozzle turbine control, intake cooling recirculation, and exhaust gas cooling. The engine features aluminum cylinder heads, roller rocker arms, upright central injectors, and oil-cooled filters. It can reach a maximum power of 120 kW, meets Euro III standards, and is capable of upgrading to Euro IV and V. Its noise levels are 72.5 dB at idle and 89.3 dB at full load.
**Deutz FAW Diesel C, E, D Platforms**
These platforms cover the Deutz 1013, 2012, and 2013 series, offering 4- and 6-cylinder engines across 39 models (30 for automotive use, 9 for engineering). They meet Euro III emissions standards and have potential for Euro IV upgrades. Power ranges from 85 to 340 horsepower, with starting torque up to 600 Nm—over 10% higher than similar products. These engines are 150–200 kg lighter and offer fuel consumption as low as 195 g/kWh, with noise levels under 96 dB.
**12-Liter Engines: A New Battlefield**
Another key development is the rise of 12-liter engines, which have become a new focal point after the 10-liter segment. Domestic manufacturers and even整车 companies are pouring resources into this area.
Weichai’s WD12 11.6-liter engine has been a top seller, with over 10,000 units sold in less than a year. However, it now faces competition from rivals eyeing the 12-liter market. Dachai, while focusing on joint ventures, still reserves space for independent R&D. Xichai, after years of effort, has developed the CA6DN1, a 13-liter heavy-duty diesel engine that powers the Jiefang J6 truck.
Cummins is also making waves in China. Joint ventures like Dongfeng Cummins and Xi'an Cummins are producing high-power engines that could reshape the heavy truck market. Additionally, China National Heavy Duty Truck is investing heavily in research and development, with plans to introduce more powerful engines in the near future.
With FAW pushing downward, heavy truck manufacturers breaking through, and Cummins launching a two-pronged attack, Weichai finds itself in a tough spot. The 12-liter segment is now a battleground for dominance, and the future remains uncertain.
Who will emerge as the new leader? Only time will tell.
