It was learnt from Sinopec Group that Zhongyuan Petrochemical's 600,000-ton/year MTO plant successfully produced qualified polymerization grade ethylene and propylene products on October 10th to achieve a successful start-up of the unit.

Zhongyuan Petrochemical's 600,000-ton/year methanol to olefins project uses S-MTO process technology independently researched and developed by Sinopec, independent research and development, preparation of catalysts and special equipment. The main equipments are all domestically realized, and more than 150 patents have been applied and corresponding Downstream production equipment. The project was started on August 15, 2010, and was handed in on July 15, 2011, and it entered the stand-alone trial run phase in August.
Methanol to olefins is one of the key units of coal to olefins, and is a landmark technology of modern new coal chemical industry. This technology uses non-oil feedstocks to obtain olefins, which cleans and efficiently uses coal resources and improves the coal chemical industry chain. China is rich in coal resources, and the development of coal-to-olefins (coal to methanol to olefins) industry is an effective alternative to oil.
