Toyo Advanced Machine Tool develops coating technology that extends mold life

Toyo Advanced Technologies (headquarters: Hiroshima City) developed a coating film "low-temperature TiC (titanium carbide)" for stamping dies, and applied TiC to the mold by PVD (physical vapor deposition). Due to the low temperature treatment, the dimensional accuracy and shape accuracy of the mold after coating are high, and the wear resistance is excellent.

In general, a TiC film formed by CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) has a high hardness and high slidability, and therefore is often used in a mold that is subjected to a high load such as a compression mold of a high-tensile steel sheet. However, high temperature treatment must be carried out at around 1000 °C. On the other hand, PVD is inferior to CVD in terms of film adhesion and coating properties, but since it can be processed at a low temperature of 500 ° C or lower, thermal deformation is small, and dimensional accuracy and shape accuracy are high. Recently, the case of coating by PVD to increase the accuracy has been increasing.

The newly developed low-temperature TiC not only has the advantages of PVD - high dimensional and shape accuracy, but also has the function of CVD to improve the life of the mold. Unlike the CVD method, the coating does not require heat treatment. In addition, since the shape and precision of the mold are high, there is no need to adjust the mold before it is combined into the pre-coating state, so that the mass production can be started in a short time after the compression mold is completed.

When the treatment is carried out by a new technique, in order to compensate for the PVD defect that the TiC adhesion to the mold base material is low, first, a film having high adhesion to the base material is formed. A TiM coating of several μm thick was then formed by a single film. The TiC film thus formed had a hardness and a film adhesion of about 1.3 times as compared with P-TiCN (titanium carbonitride) treated by PVD.

In addition, the company plans to exhibit samples using low-temperature TiC technology on "INTERMOLD 2007" (Tokyo BIG SIGHT) held on April 25-28, 2007.
