Ontarioville Volunteer FD gets historic plaque

Ontarioville Volunteer Fire Department

In the 1920s, a service station in Hanover Park became home to the village’s first fire department, housing its fire trucks.

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

In the 1920s, a service station at 2064 W. Lake Street served as the base for Hanover Park's first fire department, with fire trucks stored there. The location, now occupied by Suburban Tire Auto Repair Center, has been marked with a heritage plaque recognizing its historical importance.

Hanover Park Fire Chief Craig A. Haigh and over 50 residents were present when officials unveiled a commemorative plaque at the site. The Ontarioville Volunteer Fire Department was officially formed on April 3, 1928, after the community raised $282 to start the effort.

Fire Lieutenant Jim Hite, who is now in his 50s, shared memories of visiting the site as a child with his late father, Glen Hite, a volunteer firefighter. “Back then, they used to say it took eight minutes to get from here to Sherman Hospital,” he said. “Now, we can’t even cross town in that time,” he joked, watching heavy traffic flow past during a rush hour event on West Lake Street.

Hite also recalled that in the 1960s, there was an old Harvester fire truck at the station, which he saw again in 1982 when he joined the department. “It wasn’t used for emergency responses, but it was part of parades and special events,” he explained.

Today, Hanover Park has a full-time fire protection department, though volunteers still play a key role in staffing the rehabilitation unit. The legacy of the early firefighters lives on, not just in history books, but in the hearts of those who remember the days when a simple service station became the heart of a community’s safety.
