In the 1920s, a service station in Hanover Park served as the home for the village’s first fire department, housing its fire trucks and becoming a vital part of local history. Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com: In the 1920s, a service station at 2064 W. Lake Street became the first fire department in Hanover Park, serving as a base for fire trucks. Today, that site is occupied by Suburban Tire Auto Repair Center and has been marked with a heritage plaque to honor its historical importance. Hanover Park Fire Chief Craig A. Haigh, along with over 50 residents, was present when officials unveiled a commemorative plaque at the location. The site now stands as a reminder of the community's early efforts in public safety. The department, known as the Ontarioville Volunteer Fire Department, was officially formed on April 3, 1928, after the community raised $282 to start it. This modest beginning laid the foundation for what would become a full-time fire protection department. Fire Lieutenant Jim Hite, who was around six years old at the time, often visited the station with his late father, Glen Hite, a volunteer firefighter. He shared memories of the past, including how the department once claimed an eight-minute response time to Sherman Hospital. “Back then they would talk about an eight-minute response time from here to Sherman Hospital,†Hite said. “Now we can’t even make it across town in that time,†he joked, as traffic flowed heavily on West Lake Street during the event. He also recalled a 1962 Harvester fire truck that had been stationed there and was still visible in 1982 when he joined the department. “It wasn’t used for emergency calls, but it was a regular sight in parades and community events,†he said. Today, Hanover Park has a full-time fire department, though volunteers still play an important role in supporting the rehabilitation unit. The legacy of the Ontarioville Volunteer Fire Department continues to be celebrated by those who remember its humble beginnings.
