If detected, the software will disable the high-pressure fuel pump, reduce engine power, and lower engine compartment temperatures, according to documents posted on the NHTSA website. Owners are expected to receive notification letters starting April 1. So far, Ford has reported five under-hood fires and 14 warranty replacements of fuel injectors, but no crashes or injuries have been recorded. In an email, Ford stated it is not replacing the fuel injectors because it believes the current measures will prevent the issue from occurring. The updated software will also trigger a dashboard warning light, allowing drivers to safely pull over and seek service. According to NHTSA documents, the problem affects only about 1% of the recalled vehicles. Additionally, Ford announced an extended warranty for cracked fuel injectors, ensuring that owners who experience the issue will get replacements. While repairs are already available, details of the extended warranty will be released in June. This recall is part of an ongoing effort, following a similar 2022 recall for the same issue. Ford mentioned that the repair method was tested on vehicles involved in the previous recall and claims there have been no issues so far. Despite the concerns, Ford does not recommend parking the SUVs exclusively outdoors, as there’s no evidence that fires occur when the engine is off. The company also emphasized that the recall is not a replacement but a preventive measure. NHTSA has previously stated it doesn’t have the authority to pre-approve recall fixes.
