Excerpts from abcnews.go.com: Ford has issued a recall for nearly 43,000 small SUVs due to a potential fuel leak issue that could lead to fires. The problem arises when gasoline leaks from the fuel injectors and comes into contact with hot engine parts. However, the company is not repairing the actual fuel leaks directly—instead, it’s implementing a workaround to reduce the risk. The affected models include certain 2022 and 2023 Bronco Sport SUVs, as well as 2022 Escape models, all equipped with 1.5-liter engines. According to Ford’s filings with U.S. safety regulators, cracks in the fuel injectors can cause fuel or vapor to accumulate near ignition sources, potentially leading to fires. To address the issue, dealers will install a tube that directs fuel away from hot engine components and onto the ground beneath the vehicle. Additionally, they’ll update the engine control software to detect pressure drops in the fuel system. If such a drop occurs, the software will disable the high-pressure fuel pump, lower engine power, and reduce temperatures in the engine compartment, as outlined in documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Owners are expected to receive letters starting April 1st informing them of the recall. So far, Ford has reported five under-hood fires and 14 warranty replacements for fuel injectors, though no crashes or injuries have been linked to the issue. In a statement, Ford explained that it’s not replacing the fuel injectors because it believes the current fix will prevent failures and keep customers safe. The updated software will also trigger a dashboard warning light, allowing drivers to safely pull over and seek service. According to NHTSA documents, the issue affects only about 1% of the recalled vehicles. Additionally, Ford has announced an extended warranty for cracked fuel injectors, ensuring that affected owners will get free replacements. While repairs are already available, more details about the extended warranty will be released in June. This recall follows a similar one in 2022 for the same issue. Ford claims the repair has already been tested on vehicles involved in the previous recall and says it’s unaware of any problems arising from it. The automaker also clarified that it doesn’t recommend parking these SUVs exclusively outdoors, as there's no evidence that fires occur when the engine is off. However, NHTSA has stated it will closely monitor the effectiveness of the recall fixes using field data. For further information, owners are advised to contact their local dealership or Ford directly. This latest action highlights ongoing efforts by automakers to proactively address potential safety concerns before they escalate into serious incidents.
