Key technology research project on air pollution prevention in Wuhai and surrounding areas started
In 2018, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region launched a major science and technology project titled "Study and Demonstration of Key Technologies for Air Pollution Prevention and Control in Wuhai and Surrounding Areas." Aimed at addressing significant technical challenges and achieving precise control of air pollution in the region, this initiative was designed to support scientific innovation in the fight against environmental degradation. On December 15th, a special start-up meeting was held in Wuhai City, where leading experts from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Henan Polytechnic University, and various local companies gathered to review and demonstrate the implementation plan.
Wuhai and its surrounding areas are key energy and heavy chemical industry zones in China, with seven industrial parks across the autonomous region and Ningxia. The heavy industrial structure leads to high consumption and emissions, making air pollution control a complex and urgent task. Recognizing this, the regional party committee and government established a leading group for joint prevention and control, issuing several policy documents, including "Opinions on Strengthening Joint Prevention and Control of Air Pollution in Wuhai and the Surrounding Area" and "Implementation Opinions on Good Pollution Prevention and Control."
To implement these policies, the Science and Technology Department conducted extensive research, identifying major technical bottlenecks and compiling a list of key technologies needed for pollution control. Based on this, the department launched a special project focused on tackling critical environmental issues such as atmospheric pollution source analysis, coal gangue self-ignition treatment, coking industry pollution control, and waste rock ecological restoration.
The project adopts a collaborative innovation model involving production, education, and research. Led by Inner Mongolia University of Technology, it is jointly developed by Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology, Inner Mongolia Guangna Coal Industry Group, and Inner Mongolia Mengcao Seed Industry Research Institute. The project aims to break through major technical barriers, including solid waste utilization, vermiculite spontaneous combustion suppression, and high-temperature flue gas pollution control.
According to Dr. Sun Junmin, the project leader, one of the innovations is combining fly ash utilization with air pollution control and coal self-ignition management, using coal transformation to address high-temperature smoke pollution. Another innovation involves leveraging porous materials' strong adsorption properties to control secondary particulate matter formation and achieve efficient removal of pollutants.
To ensure smooth implementation, the project team hired a group of seven experts led by Academician Zhang Yuanhang. After site visits and reviewing the plan, the expert group confirmed that the project's direction was accurate and the implementation plan feasible. They also provided valuable suggestions for further improvements.
Yun Tao, deputy inspector of the Science and Technology Department, attended the meeting and emphasized the importance of involving top domestic and international research institutions and experts. He encouraged the project team to refine the plan based on expert feedback, strengthen communication, and leverage global platforms to integrate advanced pollution control technologies.
Looking ahead, the Science and Technology Department will continue to enhance the supply of science and technology for air pollution control. It will focus on implementing joint prevention and control tasks, promoting the development and demonstration of advanced technologies in key industries, and establishing a conference mechanism to align science and technology with regional economic and social development. This effort aims to foster a green, innovative development model for the autonomous region.
