Firefighters pay their respect to CFD FF Edward Stringer – update
Chicago Firefighter Edward Stringer was laid to rest today in a heartfelt ceremony honoring his service and sacrifice. The 48-year-old firefighter passed away on December 22, 2010, after sustaining fatal injuries when a building collapsed during a fire at 1744 E. 75th Street. His funeral began at the Blake Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, where family and colleagues gathered to pay their respects. A funeral Mass was held later at St. Rita of Cascia Chapel on South Western Avenue, followed by burial at Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island.
Tim Olk captured the solemn events throughout the day, documenting the procession from the funeral home to the church. Due to the family's wishes, no photographers were allowed inside the cemetery during the burial. The event drew hundreds of firefighters from across Illinois and the country, showing deep respect for a man who had dedicated his life to protecting others.
At the funeral home, Engine 63, where Stringer served, was adorned with bunting and his turnout gear, symbolizing his final journey. Firefighters from Engine 63 acted as pallbearers, carrying the casket to the church. The Chicago Fire Department Pipes and Drums led the procession, accompanied by an honor guard, creating a moving tribute to the fallen hero.
As the engine made its way to the church, crowds lined the streets, showing their support and grief. Members of Engine 63 marched behind the vehicle, walking alongside their fallen brother one last time. Upon arrival, the casket was carefully removed from the hosebed, and the pallbearers prepared to carry him into the church for the final farewell.
A member of the Honor Guard stood beside Engine 63, holding a flag from the 23rd Battalion alongside Stringer’s gear, a powerful reminder of the legacy he left behind. Tim Olk has compiled a full gallery of photos from the event, which can be viewed [here](#).
