Worker dies in chemical tank in Wheeling – update 1
This is the first in a series of updates covering the confined space recovery operation that took place on Thursday at the Sunnyside Corporation industrial site, where a worker was overcome by fumes from methylene chloride inside an outside storage tank. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present throughout much of the operation, capturing key moments as emergency responders worked to recover the victim.
Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the first Wheeling fire companies and documented the scene as officials determined the operation would be a recovery rather than a rescue. The images show the seriousness of the situation and the careful planning involved in such a delicate task.
A technical rescue box alarm was activated, and on-scene units began preparing for the removal before additional technicians, equipment, and supplies arrived. The operation required careful coordination and specialized gear to ensure the safety of all involved. As the sun set over the site, the focus remained on bringing the victim’s body out with dignity and respect.
