Mare’s revenue increased significantly year-on-year in the first half of 2015

In the first half of 2015, Mahle Group achieved a revenue of 5.53 billion Euros, a 12.5% increase from the same period last year. The EBIT of 314.5 million euros also increased by 17.2% year-on-year, making the EBIT margin up to 5.9%. “The first-half results exceeded our expectations. It is worth noting that the higher exchange rate has brought us favorable effects,” commented Wolf-Henning Scheider, Chairman and CEO of the Group Management Board.

It is predicted that the Group's comprehensive growth rate for the full year will be around 15%, which is to reach sales of 114-11.6 billion euros. Scheider thinks, "The route we set for ourselves began to pay off."

In the first half of the year, all of Mahler’s business segments and all regions except South America achieved growth.

The growth of the European auto market was weak and the region contributed about 51% of total sales. Italy and Spain showed clear signs of recovery, but they still could not offset the sharp decline in the markets of Eastern Europe, especially Russia (-26%). “The current situation is not encouraging, but the potential of this market can not be underestimated. From a medium-term perspective, the above-average growth is promising,” Scheider commented.

The development of the North American market is particularly gratifying. In the first half of this year, the sales growth reached about 19%, and sales accounted for about 24% of the entire group. “North American passenger cars and light commercial vehicles have grown by 3% and the development momentum is strong. We have seized this opportunity,” Scheider said. The production of medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles surged by 8.5%. Just a few weeks ago, the commissioning of two new plants in Ramos Arispe and Celaya, Mexico, will produce air-conditioning modules and air filtration systems, respectively, to supply markets in North and South America. By the end of 2015, MAHLE will have 10 production sites in Mexico and more than 8,000 employees.

The Asian market has experienced significant weakness. However, Mahler has achieved a converse growth, an increase of more than 22%. The recession in China's commercial vehicle market is particularly noticeable, while the Indian market has rebounded significantly in this sector. “Although current performance has been hindered, the Asian market, which accounts for 19% of total sales, is still the largest growth market. Therefore, we must continue to actively expand our business in the region,” Scheider said. In recent weeks, the company has achieved significant success in the region. In the next few years, Mahler will supply cooling modules for two turbocharged gasoline engines from a well-known Chinese brand manufacturer.

The development of the South American market remains difficult and the region currently contributes only 6% of the group's total sales. However, Mahler's performance is still good given the region's 16% drop in vehicle production this year. “Although the current situation is grave, the potential in the South American market is still huge, so we will not give up,” Scheider stressed.

Overall, the sluggish trend in several major regions of the world has dragged down global car production. In view of this, we expect the output growth will be relatively flat, with an increase of 1.7% and a total volume of about 89 million units. Even so, this figure has reached an unprecedented height.

As of June 30, Mahle Group has a total of approximately 67,000 employees in 170 organizations located around the world, an increase of 5.5% over the same period of last year.

Strategic fronts for mechatronics and thermal management have been strengthened

The semi-annual report included the first consolidated sales of Rayica Group and Amos, totaling 110 million euros. More importantly, the integration of some of the recent acquisitions has further promoted the technological advancement of Mahle Group. For example, in the area of mechatronics, MAHLE acquired more expertise in motors through the acquisition of Rayrica Group. “We are developing a series of electric auxiliary equipment, such as coolant pumps, electric steering motors, etc. These devices do not work with internal combustion engines and help to improve CO2 emissions,” explains Scheider. Japan’s domestically-made electric motors Co., Ltd. also brought a wealth of experience and knowledge. In June 2015, Mahle had just acquired 90% of the company’s shares, and thus it has not been able to be reflected in the financial statements in the first half of the year. “We have seen tremendous potential for development in the area of mechatronics. In the medium term, we set a sales target of 500 million euros,” Scheider said.

The thermal management business of Delphi Group, a US component supplier acquired in February, was also not included in this financial statement. Since June 30, 2015, 7,500 employees and 13 organizations under this business unit formally became part of the Mahle Group. Last year, the business unit achieved sales revenue of about 1 billion euros. “The completion of this merger has made Mahle the world's second largest supplier of thermal management in the automotive industry,” Scheider stressed. The segment's product range includes engine cooling systems, cabin air conditioning systems, air conditioning technology for mobile and stationary unit applications, and electric drive solutions. “High-performance batteries require a stable temperature environment. Our solutions will not only meet this demand, but will also make an important contribution to the future development of electric mobility and the diversification of Mahle Group's business,” Scheider said. The funds needed for the June acquisition have been secured in May. In addition, Mahler has placed a total of 500 million euros of secondary bonds and has been oversubscribed with a 4 factor. "In the capital market, Mahler is seen as an attractive investment project," Scheider stressed. Through the expansion of its business scope, more than half of Mahler Group's sales now come from its traditional passenger vehicle internal combustion engine systems and components.
