Affected by the world economic crisis, in the first half of 2009, the Swiss machinery and electronic engineering industry suffered heavy losses. According to Swissmem, industry sales and new orders have all declined significantly, with sales falling by 19.1% and new orders plunging by 34.3%. In order to deal with this crisis, the government and related departments need to take special measures.
According to statistical data provided by 209 companies owned by Swissmem, in the first half of 2009, the total sales of enterprises fell by 19.1%. Compared with 2008, sales in the second quarter decreased by 22.7% year-on-year, which is a greater increase than the 15.1% year-on-year decline in the first quarter. Excluding 4/5 of the total sales of overseas business (a drop of 19.5%), domestic business continued to shrink, with sales falling by 17.2%.
In the first half of the year, new orders from the industry continued to decline, with new orders in the first quarter falling by 41.8% year-on-year and down by 26.6% year-on-year in the second quarter. Among them, overseas orders fell by 36.4% and domestic orders fell by 26.3%.
In the first half of 2009, the performance of all industries under Swissmem was not optimistic. Swissmem's exports to all industries totaled 31.4 billion Swiss francs, a decrease of 23.0% from the same period in 2008. Among them, the metal processing industry and mechanical engineering suffered heavy losses in exports, falling by 37.5% and 27.4% respectively. Exports of electrical and electronic engineering and auto industry decreased by 19.2% and 13.5% respectively year-on-year. Only precision instruments also performed slightly better, down 5.1% year-on-year.
The downturn in the market is mainly reflected in the sharp drop in sales. In Western Europe, Switzerland’s two-thirds of the major export regions of mechanical and electronic products, sales fell by 25.5% year-on-year. The neighboring Germany has dropped by 27.0%, France has dropped by 30.7%, and Italy has dropped by -32.9%. Exports to the Asian market, which accounted for about 17% of Asia's market share and became the second most important sales area, fell by 15.6%, while exports to the United States fell by 22.7%.
