Glenside added to the site
The Glenside Fire Protection District, located in Glendale Heights, has recently been added to the site. Situated within MABAS Division 12, the department operates from a single fire station at the intersection of Fullerton Avenue and Bloomingdale Road. The station was originally constructed in 1970 and underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2004, bringing it up to modern standards.
Glenside is equipped with two Medtec ambulances, a new 2010 Ferrara Inferno pumper, two E-ONE HP75 quint units, and a Pierce pumper. Additionally, the district is home to one of three MABAS Division 12 hazmat trailers, making it a key resource for regional emergency response.
Currently, most of the department’s apparatus is painted black over red. Prior to this, the vehicles were white over red starting in 1996. In the early years of the department, the apparatus was a bright yellow, which was also reflected in their uniform patches, giving the department a distinct and memorable look.
The station itself, located at 1608 Bloomingdale Road, is a well-maintained facility that has served the community for decades. A photo of the station, taken by Larry Shapiro, captures its exterior and highlights its long-standing presence in the area.
One of the department's standout pieces of equipment is the 2010 Ferrara Inferno engine, which showcases the latest in firefighting technology. Another notable unit is Engine 711, which was originally delivered in 1989 as Engine 701 in the department's original yellow color. This vehicle provides a glimpse into the department’s history and evolution over time.
In 1996, Glenside transitioned from yellow to a red color scheme with a white roof, as seen in a delivery photo of Quint 705. This change marked a shift in the department’s identity and visual style.
Before acquiring its first E-ONE quint in 1986, Glenside operated a 1972 Ford/Pierce 55' Snorkel as Engine 5, equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. This unit played a vital role in the department's operations during its early years.
