A message from the webmaster: I’d like to sincerely apologize to all who follow this website, including those who read the blog, for the lack of updates and modernization over the past few years. When the site was first launched in August 2009, it included fire departments and districts across the region, along with station details and apparatus information. At the time, I used three different software tools to create a layout that I believed would be easy to navigate and visually appealing. As the site grew, so did the complexity. The blog evolved, and maintaining the main site became increasingly difficult. Adding a new department took nearly as long as updating one or two pieces of equipment. In some cases, it even took close to 20 minutes just to add a single new vehicle to a department’s page. This process quickly became unsustainable, and a complete overhaul was necessary. To keep things moving during the transition, I started posting new apparatus on the blog while saving the images in a folder for later updates. Unfortunately, the main site hasn’t been updated in over a year, which is simply not acceptable. After trying several different platforms, the development of the new site is now well underway. Rebuilding every existing department and station, along with those that have never been added, is a massive task. Initially, I hoped to complete the entire site at once, but that could still take several months. For now, the current site, Chicagoareafire.com, remains online, alongside the new version at Chicagoareafire.com/dev, which is still under development but accessible to anyone who wants to take a look. To date, the Chicago Fire Department, MABAS Division 1, MABAS Division 3, and part of MABAS Division 4 are already live on the new site. Some new apparatus have been added to replace older ones, but many more are still pending. Several contributors have helped greatly with the update process. I welcome any corrections, submissions, or feedback as we continue to improve the site. Feel free to explore the new layout and send any suggestions or updates via the contact form. Your input is invaluable, and I’m always looking for photos to help fill in the gaps. If your department has been added to the new site, please take a moment to check the information—personnel numbers, frequencies, district sizes, and station addresses. Some apparatus may have been retired or relocated since they were last listed, and I need accurate data to keep everything up to date. You can tell when a department has been added by looking for a white box around the station photo on the MABAS division pages, along with an active link. Take a look at the new site—it's more user-friendly, with dropdown menus and full-page navigation options. It's still a work in progress, but I think you'll find it much easier to use. Finally, I ask for your patience. This is a lengthy and complex project, and it will take time to complete. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
